Safiya Sideek b. 1992

Safiya Sideek is a Colombo-based visual artist whose work captures the essence of her island home, Sri Lanka. Through her paintings, she brings to life the natural beauty of her surroundings, from the lush tropical foliage to the expansive ocean that defines the Sri Lankan landscape. With every brushstroke, Safiya seeks to evoke the harmony and tranquility of her homeland.
A graduate of the Canadian University of Dubai, Safiya earned her BArch in 2015. In addition to creating art, Safiya has developed a product line called Elements, a collection of sustainable travel art supplies made from biodegradable materials and waste.
Beyond painting, Safiya is a dedicated mother to her six-year-old son and an advocate for mindfulness and environmental awareness through her art. Since 2019, she has taken on roles in education, leading workshops where she encourages participants to engage deeply with their surroundings and develop a greater appreciation for the environment through artistic expression.
Safiya’s work is not only exhibited but also commissioned for both public and private
collections, with a particular focus on Sri Lankan landscapes. In recent years, she has ventured into mural art, mastering the craft of large-scale wall painting and adapting to the unique challenges of creating art in public spaces.
Her artistic journey also includes a series of intimate illustrations, inspired by her daily life in Colombo—her commute, her mother’s cooking, and the tender moments that define Sri Lankan living. These illustrations are transformed into postcards and painting books, offering a glimpse into the everyday beauty of her homeland.
