Sewing and paper bags has been integral to my practice.
Living through scarcity has given me confidence in
exploring possibilities within my art. These A3 paper bags were originally larger tea sacks that
transported tea from the hills to Colombo markets for
repackaging and export.
Recycling and repurposing are important to me and I
have loved developing relationships with the people
who save them for me.
Both my grandmothers and mother were prolific with
needles, mending and making—skills that are becoming
rare today. Now, as the eldest living female member of
my family, I feel a deep connection to these women
when I hold a needle.
I consciously choose this art practice for its feminist
principles, embracing a horizontal approach. Like many
female artists throughout history, I create art over the
dining table in the evening, once family duties are done.
