Mysteries and Miracles, a series of paintings by Josephine Balakrishnan, explores the parallels between mystery
detective novel and pilgrim’s progress. In these paintings the detective/pilgrim uncovers the mystery of the universe by searching for truth. The work uses spiritual symbols from many cultures in combination with forensics, the science of crime solving. Balakrishnan’s paintings employ vibrant colors and narrative imagery to reveal the steps to solving the ultimate mystery. Crisis, disaster and failure as well as success are embodied in this work with a sense of wry sense of humor. Against all odds, the detective and the pilgrim each strive to uncover subtle clues, and neither will let anything stop him from his progress. The Detective/Pilgrim operates at peril to the outside requirements of stability or sanity. Finding the right clues, listening to false reports and keeping a keen eye on the goal are just a few of the theme groups of these paintings. Our serious approach to life is given a gentle and playful nudge. Goethe said “Mysteries are not necessarily miracles.” However, as this compelling new work by Josephine Balakrishnan so poignantly reveals, sometimes they are.
Balakrishnan's work, described as "Tropical Pop," combines East Indian imagery with western narrative. Ms. Balakrishnan has exhibited internationally, in both the East and the West for the past 25 years. Her works extends to multimedia, sold in the stores of 22 major museums, including the Whitney Museum of Modern Art, the Walker Art Centre and the Guggenheim Museum.
